Interview on Generative AI in Game Development

I recently had the opportunity to speak with International Games Magazine (IGM) about the use of Generative AI in game development. The full interview will be published in the upcoming issue of IGM (10/23).

In the meantime, you can get a taste of the discussion on the IGM website. During the interview, I addressed various aspects concerning the application of Generative AI in the gaming sector.

Key Insights on Generative AI in Game Development

Here are some of my key thoughts highlighted in the article:

AI and Copyright: A New Perspective

“AI doesn’t copy – it hallucinates. An AI doesn’t copy texts and rewrite them – it actually reinvents the content. That’s why I don’t think it’s such a big copyright issue.”

This statement suggests a crucial distinction: Generative AI creates novel content rather than merely duplicating existing works. For this reason, the traditional notion of copyright infringement might need re-evaluation in this context.

The Importance of Transparency and Documentation

I also stressed the critical importance of transparency when utilizing AI:

“Companies should have processes in place to track the source of assets, who reviewed them, and who adjusted them. In return, you can also track the assets. So it’s all about documentation – and appropriate wording in the contracts.”

Robust internal processes and clear contractual agreements are essential for managing AI-generated assets effectively. This approach helps ensure accountability and traceability, which are vital in modern game development.

The Transformative Role of AI in Game Creation

Finally, I emphasized the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence in game development:

“In the past, you had to animate things by hand – now there’s an AI behind it. In half an hour you can use it to create a complete 3D world, with automatically populated areas, wind, trees and so on. All of this is procedurally generated – with the help of AI. It’s far from a finished game, though.”

AI significantly streamlines complex tasks, allowing developers to generate vast game environments rapidly. While AI automates many creative processes, human oversight and artistic direction remain indispensable for delivering a polished final product.

Conclusion

I encourage you to read the full interview in the next issue of IGM to gain deeper insights. Alternatively, explore the complete article on the IGM website to further understand the exciting possibilities that Generative AI offers for game development.
