I recently reported in this article that a data leak can be quite expensive if the injured party decides to claim damages under Article 82 of the GDPR. However, there are no judgments on this yet.
A new legal-tech company has now been founded around this topic, the Europäische Gesellschaft für Datenschutz mbH. Through the provider, consumers who may have been affected by Marriot’s data loss should be able to have their claims reviewed free of charge and without obligation.
EuGD’s entire service is free of charge. In the event of success in court, i.e. if
is awarded damages, EuGD retains 25 percent of the amount of damages as commission.
The first lawsuits against Marriot are said to have already been filed, with further consequences.
The offering is thus in line with the trend toward legal tech startups, which already exist for a wide range of legal issues, from excessive rents to compensation for flight delays to divorces.
